People Supported Across Kitchener-Waterloo

When Life Gets Complicated, the Legal System Shouldn't Make It Worse.

For many people in Kitchener-Waterloo, legal problems don't arrive one at a time. A landlord threatening eviction. An immigration form that doesn't make sense. A child welfare question with no clear answer. A benefit that got cut off without explanation. These problems overlap and compound — and when you're already dealing with housing insecurity, mental health challenges, or financial stress, figuring out where to even start can feel impossible.

The legal system has answers. Most people just don't know how to reach them.

Too often, the system feels distant, confusing, and impossible to navigate. CLIP was built to change that.

The Community Legal Information Project (CLIP)

Proudly funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario, CLIP is a free program that brings legal information into the community spaces people already trust. Our team works on-site at locations like Supportive Housing of Waterloo and the Social Development Centre, places where people are already going for support.

CLIP serves anyone in Kitchener-Waterloo who has a legal question and doesn't know where to turn; people experiencing homelessness or precarious housing, newcomers navigating immigration questions, and anyone facing challenges with housing, income, family, or criminal law.

We sit down with people. We listen. We explain their rights, their responsibilities, and their options in plain language; in English, Rohingya, and Arabic. We don't give legal advice, and we're not a law firm. We're a bridge. A first step that helps people feel informed, not overwhelmed.

CLIP provides legal information, not legal advice. Think of us as a knowledgeable guide who helps you understand your situation, so you can decide what to do next.

How CLIP Works

1. We show up in your community

2. You ask your questions

Our team listens without judgment. Whether it's a housing issue, an immigration question, or something involving family or criminal law — we're here to help you understand what's going on.

3. You leave with clarity

We explain your rights and options in plain language. If your situation needs a lawyer or additional support, we help get you connected.

Court hearing

I didn't know where to turn. The CLIP team took the time to sit down with me, listen, and explain my options clearly. For the first time, I felt heard and I finally understood what I could do next.
— CLIP Participant

The CLIP team spent real time with me, walking me through the process step by step, helping me connect with a lawyer, and then sitting down with me again afterward to make sense of it all. They didn't just point me in a direction. They stayed with me.

I had no idea this kind of help was even available. Knowing that someone can sit down with you, explain your rights, and actually answer your questions; that makes a real difference.
